When it is difficult to talk to one another, writing can be a mediation.<\/p>\n

In 1984, Annie Ernaux is awarded the Renaudot Prize for one of her autobiographical texts, A Man\u2019s Place<\/em>[1]<\/a>, the one of her father. The one she is ashamed of in regards to the social ascent that has separated them. The writing takes eight months, some time to find the tone. \u201cI started writing a novel in which he was the main character\u201d[2]<\/a>, \u201cI have no right to adopt an artistic approach [\u2026] No lyrical reminiscences, no triumphant displays of irony. This neutral way of writing comes to me naturally.\u201d[3]<\/a> During the TV programme \u201cApostrophes\u201d of the 6 of April 1984, A.\u00a0Ernaux says it would have been a treason to write about her father as in a novel. \u201cNeutral writing is the writing of assessment.\u201d \u201cI probably write because we had nothing to say to each other.\u201d[4]<\/a> In 2022, as she receives the Nobel Prize for Literature, she explains: \u201cI had to break with \u2018writing well\u2019, the beautiful sentences, [\u2026] to root out, display and understand the rift running through me.\u201d[5]<\/a><\/p>\n

A. Ernaux, with her writing, describes. The sentences are short, making the paternal language echoing, which is plain, harsh, efficient but cautious in society: \u201cpatois<\/em> was something that was old and ugly, a sign of inferiority.\u201d[6]<\/a> \u201cHe was chatty with the customers and within his family but in front of educated people, he would remain quiet [\u2026] indescribably terrified of using the wrong word\u201d[7]<\/a>. Here is a father who can be cheerful, joking, sometimes bawdy, liking games, the circus, fireworks[8]<\/a>. He wears overalls, has an Opinel<\/em> clasp-knife, cultivates his garden, gazes at the sky, knows every bird species. He has a taste for \u201ccultivation\u201d, with A.\u00a0Ernaux\u2019s clarification: \u201cwhich was what he called the world of farming. The other meaning of the word and its spiritual implications, held no interest for him.\u201d [9]<\/a><\/p>\n

Between modesty and crudeness, the emotion is discreet, transient, barely tangible: never let go!<\/p>\n

The father\u2019s pride can be perceived through a newspaper\u2019s cutting in the deceased man\u2019s wallet: it shows Annie among the best candidates to the teacher training college. He encouraged her to study, to learn well at school, \u201clearn\u201d, not \u201cwork\u201d: real work is handwork. A.\u00a0Ernaux narrates a visit, with him, to the library, and evokes: \u201cmaybe his greatest pride or even his raison d\u2019\u00eatre<\/em> of his existence: that I belong to the world which had scorned him\u201d [10]<\/a>, \u201cthe hope that I would be better than him<\/em>\u201d [11]<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An element of affect is present, throughout the whole text, and will become the title of A.\u00a0Ernaux\u2019s 1997 book: Shame<\/em> \u201cbecame a new way of living [\u2026] Up to the point that I was no longer perceiving it, it was part of my own body\u201d[12]<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To one of Bernard Pivot\u2019s question: \u201cAre you paying back a debt?\u201d, A.\u00a0Ernaux answers with a few evocative signifiers: repairing, rehabilitating, describing gestures and postures, showing there is there nothing despicable in the matter. A father who \u201cwas looking to hold his status<\/em>\u201d[13]<\/a>.<\/p>\n
